The Virginia State University Alumni Association- Greater Triangle Area Chapter (NC) is pleased to announce its 2020-2021 Scholarship Recipients: Alani Horton and Darius Holeman. The scholarship recipients joined the chapter on its September ZOOM Chapter Meeting on September 20, 2020, where the recipients were introduced by the chapter’s Scholarship Committee Chairs and introductions/congratulatory remarks were given by all members in attendance.

Alani Horton, a freshman at Virginia State University, is a 2020 Summa Cum Laude Graduate of Knightdale High School, Raleigh, NC. Other high school academic accomplishments included Special Congressional Recognition, National Academy of Future Science and Technology Leaders, Society of Torch and Laurel, NC Scholar, AP Capstone, and National Honor Society. Alani”s high school extra-curricular activities included National Academy of Future Science and Technology Leaders Congress, National Honor Society, Knightdale High School Student Government, Knightdale High School Key Club, Knightdale High School Booster Club, Knightdale High School Varsity Softball, All American FastPitch Elite 18U Softball Her community service during high school included Raleigh Youth Recreation (Cardinals 10U softball), Knightdale High School Booster Club, Knightdale High School Food Pantry, Forestville Road Elementary School Library Media Assistant, and Raleigh Parks and Recreational (Moore Square Market).

Darius Holeman is a current senior, majoring in Business Management, at Virginia State University and hails from Durham, NC. Darius’ academic accomplishments include Dean’s List, Virginia State University FBLA-PBL President, FBLA-PBL Business Sustainability Virginia Regional Champion 2019, FBLA-PBL Impromptu Speaking Virginia Regional Champion 2019, FBLA-PBL Business Sustainability National Champion 2019, Presidential Advisory Committee in the Reginald F. Lewis College of Business at Virginia State University, Associates of Art in General College at Louisburg College, Six Sigma White Belt, Thurgood Marshall College Fund Leadership Institute Alumni, Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, His extracurricular activities/community service initiatives include Mentor For FBLA Chapter at Petersburg High School, Volunteer Coach for Long Ball Program, and Assistant Coach for Durham Parks and Recreation Baseball.
Each year, VSUAA-GTAC(NC) awards a scholarship to a VSU freshman and an upperclassman who possess academic prowess and community involvement. The Co-Chairpersons of the chapter’s Scholarship Committee are Rhonda Holley- Shanks and Percell Anderson.
